While solids block and absorb light almost completely, nets are great for reducing the intensity of light without changing its type, tone or other qualities. Single nets are great for mild dimming, taking the light down a half-stop, while double nets dim a full stop.

A dense diffusion material, silk is perfect for shaping and transforming light and shadows, as well as for bounce applications!

These rags are great for overhead full-street coverage and large-scale diffusion. Full silk causes roughly 1 stop of source light reduction, but its bounce properties also make the silk's proximity to subject a factor in how much light is ultimately delivered.

With 1 2/3 stops of light reduction and some directionality to its soft light, full grid cloth significantly softens shadows and creates a smooth, even wrap around subjects. Ultrabounce speaks for itself, offering a bright-white surface that preserves a good amount of light while offering powerful diffusion.

Among Roger Deakins' go-to lighting tools, muslin diffuses light to the point of nearly removing specular effects. Bleached muslin is bright white, providing strong diffusion with a neutral color temperature and minimal color shift. Unbleached muslin, with an off-white tone, adds a warm hue while still diffusing effectively, often used to create a sunlit or cozy aesthetic. Both are prized for their organic look, gentle wrap, and ability to be used with hot lights.
